Have A Toilet that won't flush? The Power of the Perfect Plunge

The plunger is a good enough “go to” tool when you are trying to loosen a simple clog, but the trick is in knowing how to use it and getting the right plunger to begin with.

Now your thinking aren’t all plungers the same?
No they are not!
The best option for this job is specifically a toilet plunger and it can be found for about 10 bucks.
You may run across other types of plungers, like a sink plunger but they won’t work well for a toilet because of the shape needed to get a proper seal.

The one we want is the type where the “bell” is enclosed with a flange and fits snugly into the opening at the bottom of the toilet.
Now that you have got the right tool, it’s time to learn how to use it like a pro.
Just think how impressed your friends and neighbors will be, Okay … maybe not so much.
But if you want to improve the chances of your success to get rid of the clog then here is the right way to use that fancy new plunger.

First off you’ll want to fill the plunger with water and then center the mouth (flange) of the plunger on the opening at the bottom of the toilet where everything is supposed to drain.
Next take some short up and down strokes.
This will help the plunger to get good suction on the toilet.
Now when the plunger has good suction, it’ll feel like it’s stuck to the bottom of the toilet and you should feel pressure when you pull up on the handle.
Now we are ready to break up that clog! Push and pull with fast short strokes a few times.
Make sure the plunger maintains suction while you do this.
Then pull up to break the suction and break the clog up.

Drawing the clog up in this manner keeps the clog from being forced further down the drain and impacting it making your problem clog even worse.
If it doesn’t work the first time try it again.
Once you have your clog broke you then you can flush.
But make sure the water is back to its proper level in the bowl before flushing again or you could have a nasty flood.

If the clog won’t break up and water won’t flush then its likely you have a more serious situation and it’s time to call a licensed plumber.
